The film gradually recounts her life story, from news footage, interviews with her activist husband and now grown son and daughter. But the heart and soul of the film is her defense in two contemporary "terrorist" cases: a woman who prematurely set off an incendiary device in her car, injuring only a 13-year old boy who, along with a friend (who was killed at the time), rampaged with a knife in a mixed Jerusalem area and was accused of attempted murder despite injuring no… Wow!! What a woman. What a documentary. Wasn't very fond of the graphics This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. The greatest trick Rachel Leah Jones and Philippe Bellaiche pull in Advocate is purposefully withholding a critical piece of information until the last moment. They have, of course, an admirably clever bag of tricks to draw upon throughout, and in deference to the effectiveness of this trick, I shall do the same until towards the end, focusing instead on their other techniques for the time. Needless to say, all the tricks in the world cannot do squat without a strong subject, and Lea Tsemel is quite worthy of nearly two hours about her life. The film is divided between her latest cases defending a thirteen-year old Palestinian boy who stabbed two Israeli teenagers and a young Palestinian woman who detonated… Seeing Lea Tsemel smile and joke around almost feels like a contradiction. This is a woman that has every reason to feel angry. Death threats are part of her routine. She has no illusion left as to the good of the world. She sees injustice every day. It would have been easy for her to give up on her clients and on herself. To let life follow its way. Advocate makes clear that the thought never even crossed her mind. Every day, she gets up and keeps fighting. And no matter how hard what she witnesses is, she can still crack a joke when she comes home. The portrait is built around two cases she is defending which, we learn about in considerable and fascinating legal detail, and interviews with her family and colleagues. The portrait that emerges is of a tough, compassionate, dedicated fighter who does brave work tilting at windmills that are sorely in need of being tilted at and defending those who most of her colleagues would abandon. Because the subject of the movie is herself Jewish, the movie seems to have escaped charges of anit-Semitism despite being critical of the state of Israel. Short in stature, but indomitable in spirit, Lea Tsemel is amazing. Anyone - ok, not quite, but you get my drift - could keep fighting for a cause if they had been winning for fifty years. To battle on in the face of continual defeat takes a level of grit I can’t begin to comprehend. Watching her work so hard for something that’s so important, to keep going in the face of whole society that is determined to stand in her way, is illuminating and inspiring. She’s incredible, and this documentary is a worthy tribute. Observational documentary tactics are paired with sharp, dynamic filmmaking in shaping the portrait of Tsemel into more than valedictory championing, both brining complexity to her character—her rough edges and spikey personality are not sanded down, nor are her moments of doubt silenced or the conflicted admiration of her children whitewashed—and expanding its lens to take in those joining her in the fight—husband, co-attorney, assistants. The historical tangenets are adroitely deployed as extensions of the narrative of the cases Tsemel is currently at work on, expanding on the themes therein and showing how these themes have defined Tsemel's work from its early days on. this film is really interesting and will (hopefully) make you think and maybe even find some new view points! there's these scenes in the film where the screen is split between animation & real footage, which was used so that they didn't have to just blur the clients faces and it looked amazing! this documentary was on the shortlist for Best Documentary Oscar and has won other awards including DocAviv Film Festival's Best Israeli Film! the writer & co-director Rachel Leah Jones and the advocate herself, Lea Tsemel were present at the screening and had an amazing Q&A after the screening where they talked about a the political situation in Israel, the challenges of making the documentary and the importance of fighting… spare hope... spare hope... "I'm a very angry, optimistic woman. " A beautifully made documentary that is cinematic (that super wide-screen, some stunning animation, judicious use of split-screen) and intimate at the same time. A film about a true hero who believes in justice (or the potential and ideal of justice) despite the continual, constant, overwhelming injustices she has to be faced with. Inspiring, funny, moving, fantastic, and both soul-crushing and life-affirming in equal measure. I'm going to do my utmost to watch more documentarirs this year.
